President Donald Trump’s first week in office has been active, with the President already signing executive orders to protect life both internationally and domestically. One executive order reinstated the Mexico City Policy, a policy started by Ronald Reagan and reinstated by every Republican president since. The Mexico City Policy requires – as a condition to receiving U.S. global family planning assistance – that foreign non-governmental organizations (NGOs) not use Federal funds to perform or promote abortion as a form of family planning. In his first term, President Trump expanded the policy to include most other U.S. global health assistance.
Additionally, President Trump announced that the United States will be reentering the Geneva Consensus Declaration, a coalition of over 30 countries that was co-founded by Trump in 2020. This coalition works to affirm the inherent dignity of all human beings, promote women’s health without endorsing abortion, and recognize the sovereignty of nations to enact laws that protect life.
Lastly, President Trump issued an executive order to reinforce the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for abortions, except in cases to save the life of the mother, or for rape or incest.
